CALLING ALL FILMMAKERS AND MUSICIANS/SOUND ARTISTS!
Video Jam is an exciting new experiment in sound and moving image, inspired by the traditional use of live accompaniment to silent film.
THE PROPOSAL:
We are collecting together a range of experimental short films to be screened at a venue in Manchester at the end of January. Each film will be paired with a musician or group who, reacting to the visuals provided, will perform a live score. Musicians may be provided with the film in advance or, for the more ambitious, choose to improvise on the night - we are open to suggestions.
FILMMAKERS: Send in your films by 21st DECEMBER to be considered for the programme. They must be 3-5 mins in length. We are not looking for any particular style or content (though experimental/abstract/ animation may suit well) - the only rule is that the film must be silent and you must be happy for it to be re-scored by an unknown musician. If you are sending in old material, please remove any soundtrack you may have previously added. For this reason, dialogue driven films may not be suitable, but anything you may send will be appreciated and considered. If you have any queries, don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Applications are invited from suitably qualified
candidates for a 12-month fixed-term position as Government of Ireland
Postdoctoral Fellow with the Moore Institute at NUI Galway.
The postdoctoral fellow will work on a project to
develop a critical edition of Richard Hakluyt’s The Principal Navigations…of the English Nation (1598-1600), funded by the Irish Research Council
for the Humanities and Social Sciences, with Prof. Daniel Carey as project
leader. The Hakluyt edition is under contract with Oxford
University Press in 14 volumes, and the postdoctoral fellow will work closely
with the PI in conducting research on early modern travel, developing a project
website, facilitating project communication, and organizing an editorial
workshop.
The appointed candidate will join an international
team of leading scholars working on editorial annotation of Hakluyt’s landmark
text (under the general editorship of Prof. Carey and Prof. Claire Jowitt). The IRCHSS-funded project focuses on volumes 1-4 in
the series which include Hakluyt’s prefatory materials, and documents relating
to medieval English travel, Muscovy, Persia, Iceland and elsewhere.
Essential skills:
PhD in either English,
History, Geography, or related disciplines.
Ability to work
collaboratively, with excellent communication skills
Desirable Qualifications/Experience:
Research experience on
early modern travel/colonialism/trade/geography.
Familiarity with one or
more of the following: textual criticism, editing, digital humanities.

It is 1994 and as Rwanda becomes a slaughterhouse, mosques became places of refuge where Muslims and Christians, Hutus and Tutsis came together to protect each other. KINYARWANDA interweaves six different tales based on true accounts from survivors telling a truly extraordinary and hitherto little known story.
This special preview screening is the first time the film has been shown in the UK. KINYARWANDA was the Winner of the World Cinema Audience Award at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.
The screening will be followed by a special panel discussion on the contemporary challenges of representing faith in film, featuring Kinyarwanda producer and faith-inspired filmmaker Deatra Harris; founding director of the Zanzibar International Film Festival Imruh Bakari, veteran journalist and commentator Fuad Nahdi, Insight Festival director John Forrest among others.

DEPUTY PRESIDENT SUPPORTS EAS CHRISTMAS CAROLATHON
Professor Rod Coombs, Deputy President and Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Manchester, is the latest person to volunteer to read as part of EAS's 'Christmas Carolathon' on Weds December 14th. To date over 25 undergraduates, postgraduates and academics have volunteered to read a portion of Dickens' classic A Christmas Carol in support of the housing charity, Shelter.
There are still some reading slots available for anyone who would like to contribute - particularly for the afternoon reading which will take place at the Friends Meeting House on Mount Street.

A Christmas Carol Out Loud
Ebenezer Scrooge Bob Cratchit, Mr Fezziwig, Tiny Tim and the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future will be visiting Manchester on Weds December 14th in an extravaganza organised by the Department of English & American Studies at the University of Manchester to raise funds for Shelter. We will be reading from Dickens' A Christmas Carol around the city in a variety of locations.
We will begin at 9 in the University and read the tale once, before heading down Oxford Road. A variety of locations along Oxford Road will provide the venue for the reading of selected highlights.
Another reading will take place at the Friend's Meeting House before we spill out into the Christmas Markets for a finale!
